Today, our class enjoyed a lovely outdoor learning experience as we went blackberry picking in the school grounds. The children explored nature first-hand, carefully gathering the ripe, juicy berries while noticing the different textures, colours and smells all around them.
This activity is part of our preparation for writing sensory poems, inspired by Seamus Heaney’s famous poem Blackberry Picking. By engaging their senses outdoors, the children will be able to bring rich vocabulary, vivid imagery and personal experience into their creative writing.
Today we enjoyed pancakes topped with blackberry jam, made from the berries we picked yesterday. They were absolutely delicious!
This week, our class enjoyed a wonderful visit to Seamus Heaney’s HomePlace as part of our Literacy focus on poetry. After studying his famous poem Blackberry-Picking, we explored the rich language, imagery and emotions woven through his work. Pupils took part in interactive workshops, discovered more about Heaney’s life and inspirations, and engaged in creative activities that brought his poetry to life. It was an inspiring experience that deepened our appreciation for one of Ireland’s greatest poets.
This week, as part of our whole-school Friendship Week, our P7 children took part in an exciting scavenger hunt, searching for positive affirmations hidden around the school. After collecting their messages, the pupils spent time reflecting on what each affirmation meant and discussing how small actions can help us be kinder, more supportive friends. We also explored how positive language can boost our wellbeing and strengthen our classroom community. It was a fun, thoughtful activity that encouraged teamwork, empathy, and a deeper understanding of what real friendship looks like.
The children loved dressing up in their fantastic costumes today for their final Halloween at St Colman’s. The school was filled with excitement, creativity and plenty of fun. A brilliant day was had by all!
As part of our Maths Week celebrations, the children took part in the Times Table Rockstars Challenge. This competition ran across the whole school and gave pupils the chance to showcase their recall, speed and accuracy in times tables. We are incredibly proud to have finished second place in the school.
The challenge encouraged teamwork, determination and lots of enthusiasm for numeracy. Our pupils loved cheering each other on, tracking their progress and pushing themselves to beat their personal bests.
