Sign up for our Friday note e-mail initiative

Saturday 3 December 2011

Only 3 more children needed to sign up to save 3.3kgs of grrenouse emissions.

How would you like to save paper for the school, raise money for our PA and enter a free draw for cinema tickets.

As of Monday 6th December our total so far is 35 parents (with 47 children) making a saving of 1880 Friday notes a year already.

Over the weekend we have had another 5 parents (9 more children sign up) and on Monday we had more parents and children sign up. Thank you.

If we can sign up the parents of 3 more children that will help save the environment
675 litres of water
9.5 kWh of power
3.3 kg of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e)
.
Read the bottom of the page to see how we worked out the Maths.

Sign up for the Friday Note

At the Christmas bazaar the wwwdots signed up 27 parents (33 children). Thank you to all the parents and to Andrew, Emer, Caoimhe and John who worked at the stall. It is the first time children in our school have ever had their own stall.

This initiative will begin on Friday 9th December but you must sign up by Wednesday the 7th. Anyone registering after that will be very welcome and can receive their first e-mail the following Friday. You can unsubscribe at any time.

We hope to put up a website registration in the coming days. In the meantime if you wish to register go to the contacts us section of the website, enter your name, e-mail address and tell us who teaches your children... we will do the rest.

Omniplex
You will also raise £1 for the Parent's Association and you will be entered into a free draw for 5 cinema tickets (2 adults and 3 children) for the Lisburn Omniplex. These tickets can be used individually if you wish and they are valid for one year. Good Luck!

Myths and Misinformation

Reproduced with kind permission from David Shorto, paper and print buyer for Friends of the
Earth and Green Peace. Unfortunately many people are dissuaded from making positive environmental choices by myths and misinformation which range from out of date to completely untrue. However, slowly but surely, progressis being made and the message is getting through.

For example:
- "Recycled paper is more damaging for the environment than non-chlorine bleached
paper produced from sustainable forests" -
False:

This vague generalisation with no basis in fact has been perpetuated widely. It is an all-encompassingmyth that does not stand up to questioning. With more widespread experience of the use of recycledpaper, better general environmental awareness and the scientific rigour introduced by the requirements of forestry-certification, surely its days are numbered.

The Maths

On average, each tonne of paper saves:

18 trees
67,500 litres of water
9,500 kWh of power
3,300 kg of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e)

'PaperCutz 4 Planet Ark' Campaign

So how many pages in a tonne?

Given...1 A4 page of 80gsm (gsm: Grams per Square Metre)

1m2 = 16 x A4 sheets; So... 1 A4 sheets = 80g/16 = 5grams

1 tonne = 1,000,000grams hence... 1 tonne = 1,000,000/5 A4 sheets = 200,000 A4 sheets)

Number of Friday Notes...

On average we have 40 Friday notes so each child who does not receive one potentially saves 40 pages. Once we reach 50 children that is 2000 pages - 1% of a tonne.
