Interview with Mr Kernan
Thursday 8 December 2011
We interviewed Mr Kernan and found out lots of interesting things like he has a name for his car - Austin!
1. How do you think our Planet Protection Programme is going.
I think it's going really well. I am surprised how enthusiastic everyone is too.
2. What was your favourite part of the week?
Talking to a teacher in Holland was fun and I enjoyed 6 at 6. Going on learning NI on Tuesday evening and seeing what everyone turned off. My class are getting really good at posting messages now.
3. Do you have any other exciting things you are going to do with your class?
I have been working on a programme called Microsoft Mouse Mischief. It means ll the kids can join in an interactive powerpoint. They use wireless mice. It''s great fun!
4. What is going to happen next?
Well thats up to you to decide. I know we are thinking of continuing on some of our inititiatives next week. We also have a recycling day at Tesco on the 17th January and will be meeting someone from Graham aswell. Then there is our planet protection programme we are going to run withcompetitions other schools in February and one or two other things aswell!
5. What kind of car do you drive?
A wee Huyandai - I call him Austin! At the weekend I drive a Renault Grand Scenic as all the kids would not fit in my car.
6. Did you always want to be a teacher?
I think so although I was considering being an accountant until I went on work experience. Too boring!
7. Does it take you long to travel far to get to work?
It depends on the weather and the traffic (and sometimes the number of tractors) but usually around an hour from Crossgar.
8. What ages are you children?
Three children. Conor (p4), Shane (P1) and Cara (17 months).
Can we put your screensaver photograph in the interview? I am not sure... Ok but I better check with my wife first!
9. Do you have any pets?
Two cats. Yoda and Tiogar (thats tiger - In Irish)(p4), Shane (P1) and Cara (17 months).
10. What do you enjoy most about your job?
The children. There is always an interesting and an exciting story and we usually have great fun along the way.
11. What do you not enjoy about your job?
Marking.. and I am only in P4. It must be even harder in Primary 7.
12. Where did you learn Irish?
I learned it at home from my Mum and Dad. I learned Irish first and picked up English from my friends.
13. What is your favourite display in the school at the moment?
That's a really good question. Mr O'Faogáin has a nice display but Ithink the one that stands out for me (especially this time of year) is Mrs McGrath's Christmas display. The children sketched and painted it. Do you want to get a photograph of it?
14. Do you have any hobbies?
Well at the moment it is working on a school website but I enjoy watching movies and going to the cinema with my friends Mark and Jeremy. Jeremy is deaf so normally we watch dvds but Lisburn omniplex now do a screening with subtitles on a Wednesday evening so I am looking forward to that. Maybe I should enter the competition to get tickets!

We thought we would go for product placement!
15. How many computer items did you take out of your bag this afternoon?
I am not sure- a lot!
16. Can we take a photo of them to show everyone.
Yes but don't tell Mrs Devlin I have her pen drive and you have to upload it to the website yourself!
17. Have you ever met any one famous?
Yes I met the Man United team before and I also met Stephen Spielberg on a cruise. He recognised my Armagh jersey.
18. How many years have you worked in our school?
Eleven years I think. I started the same time as Miss Gallen and Mr McVeigh. I am pretty sure we started the 1st of September 2001.
19. Do you have a motto?
I don't think so but I do try and live by the 70:30 - try and be positive most of the time.
Thank you for your time Mr Kernan. Interview conducted by the www dots team - Realising our Potential - Protecting our Planet!
